Waterways of Winchester

Winchester is full of hidden and secret waterways crisscrossing the city.  We will follow some of them and make sense of the streams, brooks, rivers and conduits.  Many have an interesting background, some dating to Anglo-Saxon times and on the way we can see and understand much of the ancient city.

Medieval Jewish History

England had a medieval Jewish community before their expulsion in 1290 by King Edward I.  Winchester was an important centre of Jewish life and we know of some fascinating characters from that time, including Licoricia of Winchester.  We will explore the old Jewish area of Winchester and the places they knew, including the Great Hall and Winchester Castle.

Portsmouth Walking Tour

The great exit and entrance to England.  The harbour has seen fleets gather, warships sail, explorers leave and return.  Old Portsmouth and the seafront are worth exploring. The history of Britain's naval past begins here, particularly in the Historic Dockyard, one of the best preserved Georgian dockyards in the world and home to the Tudor warship Mary Rose and HMS Victory, 'hero' of Battle of Trafalgar.

Isle of Wight

Cross from the mainland from Lymington, Southampton or Portsmouth and depending on transport, you can explore Osborne House, Queen Victoria's most personal residence, the towns of Cowes, Ryde or Yarmouth or explore the incredible geology and coastline including the Needles.  Visit the less explored villages and landscapes on the way.

The New Forest, Hampshire

The New Forest National Park is an incredible mix of ancient woodland, nature, free roaming animals and a unique Forest culture, centuries old.  The small towns and villages of Brockenhurst, Beaulieu, Lyndhurst and the walks over heath and wood can show you the highlights.
